Creative Learning

Tabletop wargaming originated from “Kriegspiel” a game devised in the 19th century as a training tool for officers in the Prussian Army. Since the early
20th century, wargames have been a popular theme in the gaming industry, with miniature games, board games and more recently, computer games.

Each workshop is centred on a specific battle. Participants first investigate the historical/political background to the conflict, look at the composition and tactics of the armies involved and finally, the actual events of the battle itself. They are then introduced to a simple rules system that recreates the warfare
of the period. The session concludes in a tabletop simulation of the battle,
with participants working in small teams to command their armies.

The workshops are designed to maximise benefits in the following ways:

  • Provides hands-on active learning
  • Enhances communication skills
  • Increases problem solving abilities
  • Improves numeracy and literacy skills
  • Promotes self confidence and self-expression
  • Encourages teamwork and group co-operation
  • Improves personal and social skills

In School

A fun and exciting workshop using games and simulations to investigate the historical background, strategy and tactics of important battles from history. Suitable for students aged 9 to 18

The use of historical simulations brings several advantages to history courses. They can effectively illustrate particular problems faced by military leaders; even with hindsight, students find that solving tactical problems may not be easy. Wargames are an alternate means of presenting historical information, thus reinforcing course material. The games format can also help students develop decision-making, negotiating and analytical skills in a fun and challenging way.
Tabletop Generals can be presented as either a three hour or full day

We can currently offer the following historical periods:

  • Alexander the Great
  • Hannibal and the Roman Republic
  • The Roman Empire
  • 1066
  • The Crusades
  • The Wars of the Roses
  • The English Civil War
  • 18th Century Europe
  • The Napoleonic Wars
  • 19th Century Europe
  • American Civil War
  • World War One
  • World War Two

Out Of School

Holiday Courses, After-school Clubs or Birthday Parties!!

For anyone interested in wargaming or military history (whether it’s Warhammer or Rome Total War), these workshops examine warfare and generalship in various periods of history, both on land and sea. Participants investigate the political background to the conflicts, the composition and equipment of the armies, as well as the tactics used on the battlefield. They then test their own generalship in tactical simulations using miniature figures and simple sets of wargames rules at strategic, tactical and skirmish levels.
Workshops are suitable for ages 9 to 109.

Tabletop Generals are ideal for weekends, school holidays or summer schools. Workshops have either half-day or full-day duration and can be delivered as a one-off day, or as a longer course with multiple sessions.

Almost any historical period, from ancient times to the present day, can be covered both on land and sea.
